After another of the “head-fakes” by the Palestinian Authority goes nowhere, they send out PLO Secretary General Yasser Abed Rabbo to try to save face. It might work with the UN, but those of us who are experienced M.E. watchers know the truth.

Yasser Abed Rabbo
Almost four years ago former Israeli National Security Chief Giora Eiland told me that “neither side really wants peace.” That little stunner sure got my attention. As we talked, he smiled and said, “Here’s why I say that. Neither side will or can make the sacrifices that would bring it about in light of the other’s positions.”
So, knowing that, one must answer what the Palestinian Authority thinks it’s up to with this talk of a unilateral declaration of statehood, (they say) to be agreed to by the United Nations.
We’ve already talked about the fact that the UN General Assembly is a virtual non-entity today. It’s a bunch of people that, in most cases, their heads of states want out of their own countries and the United Nations is a great place to put them.
After all they get to live richer in New York than they would in their homelands. They get tremendous expense accounts, to fly in business jets, they have diplomatic immunity and can get all the NYPD parking tickets they want with no penalty. If (when) they break American laws they can get off scott-free. They have armed body guards – no small think in NYC or DC.
And they can pretend they are really important to the rest of the world, even if they understand their being sent away from home. Arrogance, pomp and circumstance, wealthy living. What’s the downside.
Well, for one thing, the rest of us aren’t impressed. To say that the United Nations General Assembly declared anything is sort of, well, ho-hum.
So what is the PA doing thinking it will matter if their little unilateral declaration of statehood IS validated by the General Assembly? In the mind of most of the world, the PA is like the General Assembly. They don’t matter much.
As you could tell if you were paying attention, not one Arab country that is or was in the throes of revolution was doing it in the name of the Palestinians. Not a peep came out of the mobs about Israel ruling the West Bank. No placards proclaimed “CREATE A PALESTINIAN STATE!”
It didn’t happen. In fact, the Palestinians were rumored to be very troubled by all the upheaval from Algeria to Damascus. “What?! Why we better do something to grab the headlines back from all these mobs!” No, I didn’t get that quote, but there were stories floating around in Jerusalem.
Stay tuned.
