Is PA President Mahmoud Abbas coming lately to the ball? Israel, Egypt and Hamas made an agreement to swap prisoners for Gilad Shalit (and the silly non-spy that Egypt has).
Now Abbas has come out and said that former PM Ehud Olmert promised to release 500 Fatah prisoners. He wants Bibi to honor the promise. Is this going anywhere?
Maybe further than you think at first blush.
Those in the know who are close to Olmert admitted that, yes, he did make a promise to Abbas. The idea was that Abbas would be able to bear influence in getting Hamas to release Shalit. That was when the two terrorist groups were talking and working together. Olmert was supposed to release a total of 550 of Abbas’ terrorists.
Will Bibi honor Ehud Olmert’s promise? He has said in the past that all deals not signed were off.
Suppose that Bibi offered to free the prisoners as a “good will symbol” to get the Palestinians back to the negotiating table?
