Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal is reporting that he will no longer lead the terrorist group.

Why not?

Israel’s daily Ma’ariv reports that it isn’t even clear if he means it.

"It is not clear how final Mashaal's decision is," and adds that, "The reasons for his planned departure are not clear."

Most likely it is because he is facing opposition from Gaza’s Hamas leaders. And why wouldn’t they oppose him?”

They’re in Gaza facing – well hiding from – Israeli jets, and troops on occasion, when Hamas gets them riled up while their fearless leader hasn’t heard a shot fired in anger for years. That is if you don’t count Syrian troops killing their own Syrian brothers.

Then there is the question of who would replace Mashaal. If Hamas wants someone to lead from Gaza that could be difficult since the person would at times be called upon to travel to various parts of the world. Getting out of Gaza would only be possible through Egypt and right now they have enough Islamists to deal with. Stay tuned.
