10/15/2009 - Embarrassed Bragging! - DUH! - Israel settling back down!

We just got a note from a lady we met at a lecture here in Jerusalem. Thought you might be interested it. The second blurb is from a reader in Pennsylvania. (One who was even featured in Terrorist Babe!) I kid you not. Here are their comments:

“I have enjoyed reading your column each week on the Barnabus Press site and I am reading the Terrorist Babe book.

“As a Christian I am so happy to have books to read that the writer doesn't feel the need to swear and include so much sex.

“I gave up buying my mystery books because of that reason. So thank you so much.

My daughter and I came to a lecture you had when we were in Israel. I'm glad we were able to attend and find your writings.”

“I ordered my copy today! Gotta find out what Jake and Larry are up to now! Keep ‘em coming, Ernie.”

“The best book you’ve written to date!”

AL QAEDA IN THE US!? OH, JANET SAY IT AIN’T SO!

In 2002 when I began to write the Solutions.com novel series there were lots of people who mocked us for the idea that America could have terrorists in the land. Even American born terrorists in addition to the imported brand. They aren’t laughing any more. It’s in all the news, and finally… FINALLY…

EVEN THE HEAD OF DHS HAS THE IDEA.

WELL DUH!?

“It is fair to say there are individuals in the United States who ascribe to al-Qaeda-type beliefs,” Napolitano said in an interview with Bloomberg Television today. “And so it makes information-sharing, it makes effective law enforcement and it makes the shared responsibility of law enforcement ever so important.”

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.

SHE SHOULD HAVE BEEN READING OUR NOVELS FOR THE PAST FOUR YEARS!! WE NAMED NAMES, TOLD ABOUT PLOTS, AND EVEN TOOK A COUPLE OF THEM OUT – ALL COURTESY OF SOLUTIONS.COM!!

But you will please note that she didn’t utter the dreaded, self-banned word “terrorist.” Please someone find sensible adults to run the government!

WHAT ARE THE CIRCUMSTANCES? READ THEM THEN I’LL TELL YOU!

MOSCOW, October 13 (RIA Novosti) - U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said after talks with Russia's foreign minister on Tuesday that neither country is seeking to impose sanctions against Iran under the current circumstances.

The circumstances are that the Obama Regime could not face another turn down so soon after the Olympic committee sent him home with his tail between his legs and the embarrassment receiving the nonsensical “Peace Prize.” So Hillary takes the heat and smiles for the cameras after getting her face licked by the Russian Bear!

Where, Oh, Where is the America we used to know?

The scenario looks like this: Obama blinks on a missile defense system in Eastern Europe. Why? Because he knows to keep it there is to tell the Russians that we Americans think they might attack one of those nations. The Russians might not be trustworthy.

Who could imagine such a thing? Maybe the Georgians for instance? (the nation, not the state in the US.)

DOMINOES

Then Obama goes to the Russians for help with sanctions against the Iranians. Nyet.

And who, by the way, is providing fuel for the Iranians now. Ah. Now you get it.

AND THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING!

You got it. Obama is going to open up US nuclear sites and let the Russians inspect them!!

As Beck says, my eyes are shooting out blood!

HOW DID WE GET HERE?

Poets and politics? A valid point is made by two old timers and brought into focus by a modern conservative.

A good article by Jonah Goldberg in NRO on oline.

NOW FOR SOME GOOD NEWS FOR A CHANGE!

The following article will produce some encouragement in a world that seems to have no good news. It is not going to materialize in a week or two, but at least there is hope. Enjoy.

Energy crisis is postponed as new gas rescues the world

Engineers have performed their magic once again. The world is not going to run short of energy as soon as feared.

By Ambrose Evans-Prichard

Published: 11 Oct 2009

America is not going to bleed its wealth importing fuel. Russia's grip on Europe's gas will weaken. Improvident Britain may avoid paralysing blackouts by mid-decade after all.

The World Gas Conference in Buenos Aires last week was one of those events that shatter assumptions. Advances in technology for extracting gas from shale and methane beds have quickened dramatically, altering the global balance of energy faster than almost anybody expected.

Tony Hayward, BP's chief executive, said proven natural gas reserves around the world have risen to 1.2 trillion barrels of oil equivalent, enough for 60 years' supply – and rising fast.

"There has been a revolution in the gas fields of North America. Reserve estimates are rising sharply as technology unlocks unconventional resources," he said.

This is almost unknown to the public, despite the efforts of Nick Grealy at "No Hot Air" who has been arguing for some time that Britain's shale reserves could replace declining North Sea output.

Rune Bjornson from Norway's StatoilHydro said exploitable reserves are much greater than supposed just three years ago and may meet global gas needs for generations.

"The common wisdom was that unconventional gas was too difficult, too expensive and too demanding," he said, according to Petroleum Economist. "This has changed. If we ever doubted that gas was the fuel of the future – in many ways there's the answer."

The breakthrough has been to combine 3-D seismic imaging with new technologies to free "tight gas" by smashing rocks, known as hydro-fracturing or "fracking" in the trade.

The US is leading the charge. Operations in Pennsylvania and Texas have already been sufficient to cut US imports of liquefied natural gas (LGN) from Trinidad and Qatar to almost nil, with knock-on effects for the global gas market – and crude oil. It is one reason why spot prices for some LNG deliveries have dropped to 50pc of pipeline contracts.

Energy bulls gambling that the world economy will soon resume its bubble trajectory need to remember two facts: industrial production over the last year is still down 19pc in Japan, 18pc in Italy, 17pc in Germany, 15pc in Canada, 13pc in France and Russia. 11pc in the US and the UK and 10pc in Brazil. A 12pc rise in China does not offset this.

OPEC states are cheating on quota cuts. Non-compliance has fallen to 62pc from 82pc in March. Iran, Nigeria, Venezuela et al face a budget crunch. Why comply when non-OPEC Russia is pumping at breakneck speed?

The US Energy Department expects shale to meet half of US gas demand within 20 years, if not earlier. Projects are cranking up in eastern France and Poland. Exploration is under way in Australia, India and China.

Texas A&M University said US methods could increase global gas reserves by nine times to 16,000 TCF (trillion cubic feet). Almost a quarter is in China but it may lack the water resources to harness the technology given the depletion of the North China water basin.

Needless to say, the Kremlin is irked. "There's a lot of myths about shale production," said Gazprom's Alexander Medvedev.

If the new forecasts are accurate, Gazprom is not going to be the perennial cash cow funding Russia's great power resurgence. Russia's budget may be in structural deficit.

As for the US, we may soon be looking at an era when gas, wind and solar power, combined with a smarter grid and a switch to electric cars returns the country to near energy self-sufficiency.

This has currency implications. If you strip out the energy deficit, America's vaulting savings rate may soon bring the current account back into surplus – and that is going to come at somebody else's expense, chiefly Japan, Germany and, up to a point, China.

Shale gas is undoubtedly messy. Millions of gallons of water mixed with sand, hydrochloric acid and toxic chemicals are blasted at rocks. This is supposed to happen below the water basins but accidents have been common. Pennsylvania's eco-police have shut down a Cabot Oil & Gas operation after 8,000 gallons of chemicals spilled into a stream.

Nor is it exactly green. Natural gas has much lower CO2 emissions than coal, even from shale – which is why the Sierra Club is backing it as the lesser of evils against "clean coal" (not yet a reality). The US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission said America may not need any new coal or nuclear plants "ever" again.

I am not qualified to judge where gas excitement crosses into hyperbole. I pass on the story because the claims of BP and Statoil are so extraordinary that we may need to rewrite the geo-strategy textbooks for the next half century

APPARENTLY THE SAUDIS HAVE BEEN NOTICING WHAT’S REPORTED ABOVE: (You won’t believe your eyes when you read the following:

Saudis ask for aid if world cuts dependence on oil

Associated Press

Oct. 8, 2009, 5:42AM

BANGKOK — There are plenty of needy countries at the U.N. climate talks in Bangkok that make the case they need financial assistance to adapt to the impacts of global warming. Then there are the Saudis.

Saudi Arabia has led a quiet campaign during these and other negotiations — demanding behind closed doors that oil-producing nations get special financial assistance if a new climate pact calls for substantial reductions in the use of fossil fuels.

That campaign comes despite an International Energy Agency report released this week showing that OPEC revenues would still increase $23 trillion between 2008 and 2030 — a fourfold increase compared to the period from 1985 to 2007 — if countries agree to significantly slash emissions and thereby cut their use of oil. That is the limit most countries agree is needed to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.

The head of the Saudi delegation Mohammad S. Al Sabban dismissed the IEA figures as “biased” and said OPEC's own calculations showed that Saudi Arabia would lose $19 billion a year starting in 2012 under a new climate pact. The region would lose much more, he said.

“We are among the economically vulnerable countries,” Al Sabban told The Associated Press on the sidelines of the talks ahead of negotiations in Copenhagen in December for a treaty to replace the Kyoto Protocol, which expires in 2012.

“This is very serious for us,” he continued. “We are in the process of diversifying our economy but this will take a long time. We don't have too many resources.”…

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

IN CASE YOU THINK YOU ARE ALL ALONE IN DISBELIEVING GLOBAL WARMING AND EVOLUTION!

Here’s an article I came across that will encourage those of us who remember that Darwin’s nonsensical book on the origin of the species said over and over in one way or another – “we suppose.” That ain’t science, Darlin’! <grin>

REAL SCIENCE, REAL LECTURE, REAL COMMENT ON THE NONSENSE OF DARWIN’S “THEORY”

“Michael Behe, Ph.D., professor of Biological Science at Lehigh University and author of Darwin’s Black Box (1996) and The Edge of Evolution (2007), will begin the talks with his speech, “Why random mutation and natural selection are not capable of building the complex, coherent, molecular machinery recently discovered in the cell.”
“Life is a lot more complicated than what we’ve been led to believe,” Mr. Behe said. “And the standard story of evolution we’ve been led to believe is not the entire story.”

“Mr. Behe espoused Darwinian evolution as an associate professor of chemistry, but later had a drastic conversion when he researched the theory.
“I was shocked. I thought there would be reams of evidence for Darwinian evolution,” he recalled. “But there were no real explanations. I was angry that much of our view on the way the world works is based on sociology – what we’re expected to believe versus hard scientific evidence.”
“Through his research, Mr. Behe concluded, “So far, Darwinian evolution has not been able to account for the complexity of the cell.”
“Hugh Miller, research chemist, and co-author of the paper “Recent C[arbon]-14 dating of fossils including dinosaur bone collagen,” will also challenge generally accepted thinking in his speech titled, “Removing the Darwinian fig leaf: what modern carbon dating reveals about the true age of the dinosaur.” (http://thebulletin.us/articles/2009/10/10/news/local_state/doc4ad0dfa039f9b539463662.txt)

THREE TOPICS THIS WEEK:

First the cynical PA pandering to the lowest common denominator in their society.

Second a new Foreign Policy from FM Lieberman

Third is the probability of war withIran – or the lack thereof!

LET’S BEGIN WITH PRIME MINISTER NETANYAHU’S REMARKS:

Following are Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's remarks at the start of the weekly Cabinet meeting today (Monday), 12.10.09:

"Today, we will be briefed on last week's events in Jerusalem.

Last week, extremist elements tried to undermine quiet and peaceful life in Jerusalem. An extremist minority disseminated lies to the effect that we intend to dig, or were actually digging, under the Temple Mount. I would like to make it clear that this is an outright lie.

I appreciate the fact that the decisive majority of Israeli Arabs were not dragged after these provocations and did not allow the extremists to exploit the lies. This morning, I would like to appeal to Israel's Arab citizens, who want to live good and peaceful lives here and tell you that you are an inseparable part of the State of Israel. We in the Government want and will act so that you have fully equal opportunities in all areas – education, employment and infrastructures. Our intention is to implement the goals that we all share – peaceful coexistence, good neighborly relations and a prosperous future for our children, as citizens with equal rights in the State of Israel.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the police and the security forces who did – and are doing – their utmost to maintain quiet and public order." (courtesy GPO)

A QUOTE OF ANOTHER KIND:

"THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE DON'T EVEN CONSIDER THE JEWS OUR ENEMY ANYMORE," FATHY SAID. "OUR ENEMIES ARE MAHMOUD ABBAS AND HIS CRONIES." (J-Post on Friday)

This remark from a Palestinian is remarkable. A number of resources are proclaiming in different ways that a split between the leadership and the people is becoming more and more obvious.

One side of the equation is the old, drum-beating, terror-loving politicians who proclaim peace for the Western media, and then go back to Um el Fahm or Ramallah or Hebron or Nablus and shriek about the need to demolish the State of Israel. These fine feathered fellows ride around in their white Mercedes, live high on the hog (forgive that) and get rich pandering to the Iranians, Syrians and other trouble makers.

Last week PA Prime Minister Fayed issued a proclamation regarding Israel. In it he said that Jerusalem is the capital of the Palestinian people. Ten times he said it, which – even for the kind-hearted – should eliminate any possibility that he misspoke. He meant all of Jerusalem.

Now anyone with the slightest sense has to know that Jerusalem will not be turned over by Israel. Not ever, under any circumstances. Never!

Ah, but here is the thinking behind this nonsense. Repeat a lie, make it big enough and continue to tell the sheeple of the West Bank and Gaza, and sooner or later they will accept it as fact.

Point of illustration: Arafat’s idiotic lie about there never having been a Jewish Temple on what is called The Temple Mount by people the world around (except for Arabs and other Muslims). He even tried to convince former President Bill Clinton as you know from earlier pieces we’ve written.

Now millions of Muslims will devoutly tell you that the Jewish Temple never existed. When confronted by archeological proof, they no doubt ask, “What?! Are you going to believe your lying eyes!?”

SURPRISE, SURPRISE!

It does surprise many that it was Fayad who signed the letter trashing any possibility of working with Israel. He was the one voice in the Fatah tent that Westerners used to think had a sensible mind. Well, that seems to have gone by the wayside.

SO WHAT’S GOIN ON?

A couple of things: First is the desperation of the Abbas/Fatah contingent in the Palestinian Authority. When Hamas was touting their anti-corruption campaign (also drowned in the lake of reality) Fatah promised to clean up its act.

When Hamas shot up Gaza and ran off Fatah, Fatah cried foul and said that the Islamists were going to ruin all Arafat had wanted for “his brothers.”

Time has passed. Abbas cannot keep posting his and Arafat’s photos side by side and get much traction from that. Neither can Fatah condemn the Hamas guys who are in Gaza and sprinkled over the West Bank. The people aren’t buying that there is a dime’s worth of difference in the two regarding corruption.

So what is he to do…

Exactly what thugs have done down through the centuries. Blame the dirty little Jews.

The Jews are the reason you are broke and living in dirt.

The Jews are the reason you don’t have a functioning nation.

The Jews are the reason…. Ad infinitum.

ACT TWO:

The Jews have Jerusalem. It was never theirs; it was always yours. We have to take it away.

THE BIG PROBLEM!

Most Palestinians are not buying. They have tasted peace for the past few years. And they like it. The Israelis have not had to run their tanks through the land terrifying the Arab kids in all the villages of Samaria and Judea.

The government has been getting lots of money from their Uncle Sam in the US and even from the EU and Israeli tax payments. That means income for the Palestinians as the PA pays wages and undertakes some government programs that employ many workers.

The wives like that. Their teenage sons don’t get shot up tossing Molotovs at the IDF. They have some meat for the table. They can see their husbands happier and there is a sort of normalcy. That makes the men happier too.

The Israelis are no longer seen by the man on the street as the greatest concern according to some recent polls.

PALESTINIAN UNITY,

ECONOMIC CONDITIONS

CRIME

ARE GREATER CONCERNS THAN ISRAELI SETTLEMENTS.

“A POLL TAKEN BY FORMER MIDEAST ENVOY TERJE LARSEN'S INTERNATIONAL PEACE INSTITUTE GIVES AN INDICATION.

“THE COMPREHENSIVE POLL OF 2,400 PALESTINIANS IN THE WEST BANK AND GAZA FOUND THAT THE ISRAELI PRESENCE IN THE WEST BANK WAS NOT AMONG THEIR TOP THREE CONCERNS.

THEY CARED MORE ABOUT PALESTINIAN UNITY, ECONOMIC CONDITIONS AND CRIME THAN ABOUT SETTLEMENTS.

“THOSE THREE ISSUES OF PALESTINIAN GOVERNANCE, SUSTENANCE AND LAW ENFORCEMENT HAPPEN TO ALL BE CENTRAL ELEMENTS IN NETANYAHU'S MUCH-MALIGNED ECONOMIC PEACE PLAN. IF OBAMA WOULD HAVE FOCUSED ON IMPROVING THE PALESTINIANS' LIVES, PERHAPS THE PALESTINIAN LEADER'S POPULARITY WOULD NOT BE PLUMMETING AHEAD OF A KEY ELECTION NO LATER THAN JUNE OF NEXT YEAR.

“ONE OF THE GOALS OF NETANYAHU'S APPROACH WAS TO STRENGTHEN PALESTINIAN RELATIVE MODERATES AHEAD OF THE PALESTINIAN RACE, BECAUSE IT COULD BE A LOT MORE FATEFUL THAN THE ISRAELI AND AMERICAN ELECTIONS WERE FOR THE FUTURE OF THE MIDDLE EAST.

IF ABBAS FALLS AND HAMAS WINS THE ELECTION, NO AMERICAN ENVOY COULD SUCCEED IN REVIVING THE PEACE PROCESS. THAT'S WHY IT'S SO IMPORTANT FOR AMERICA THAT IT ACTS SMARTLY IN ITS RENEWED EFFORTS TO REVIVE ABBAS.”

TWO POLITICIANS WHO ARE GOING IN THE WRONG DIRECTION

Obama and Abbas have managed to misjudge the Palestinian man on the street.

BUT… Considering the concerns of those people, we do not see a war in the offing.

NOT EVEN AN INTIFADA!

Things are improving in the West Bank under Netanyahu’s moves there and the people’s concerns about normality.

The foolish attempt to foment troubles by an Israeli-Arab Sheik and a Palestinian President were exposed as exactly what they were – stupid, selfish and stunningly clumsy.

A NEW FOREIGN POLICY?

Our friend Haviv Rettig Gur wrote a very good article this week on a move by Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman.

http://www.jpost.com servlet/Satellite?cid=1254861886009&pagename=JPArticle%2FShowFull

Dismissed by some as a buffoon, Lieberman has not been in the Israeli news lately, except that he has been traveling the world.

Was Bibi keeping him out of the land to make life easier for himself, or was Lieberman really doing some good? That’s what some of us wondered.

You and I both know that there is always that possibility, and not just in coalition governments. One has to wonder that Obama hasn’t had Biden open an office in Baghdad just to keep him out of Washington.

But, according to Gur’s report it looks like Lieberman might indeed have a good plan.

Rather than rehash it, we’ll give you the link and let you read it for yourself.

NO IRAN WAR EITHER?

This week I’ve been sharing tables with some people I consider to have more than their fair share of intelligence. And the general conclusion is that for all the drum-beating by both Iran and some in the Israeli media, a war with Iran looks like it will likely not materialize.

There are lots of reasons for this, but here are a few:

The Russians have a lot of clout and they may be tamping that possibility down. They sure don’t want nukes in the air just as their nation is getting richer and richer.

The government in Iran is under a tremendous amount of internal strain. Between the dissidents and the trouble in their economy – it is strained beyond imagination in spite of their oil wealth – there is a thread of sanity (yes I said that) that should – should keep them more peaceable.

As one of my friends said, “The problem with bluster is that the idiot might mean it someday.” He wasn’t saying Iran would bomb us here, but that you have to stay constantly vigilant. There is absolutely no possibility of Israel forgetting that!

Another reason that Iran may simmer down is that – I cannot believe I’m writing this – The Obama administration said in so many words that Iran could have nuclear power if they just won’t be in the bomb building business.

Yes, I know. Trust no one. But it released some of the pressure in the Iranian leadership minds – finally they might get to have their nuclear facilities without going to war or suffering sanctions.

ON SANCTIONS

I have never been one to think that sanctions work. They deprive the citizens of a nation but name me one country that has ever overturned their leaders because the world imposed sanctions on them. It does not work.

Sure we can pat ourselves on the back and talk about how virtuous we are because we don’t puff on Havana’s Cohibos, and the people live in squalor. The cars are shot, the buildings crumbling and the Castros are still rich and in power. Only their people suffer.

It doesn’t work. It hurts our trade numbers, and the countries who agree with me sell them some of what they need and get the income.

CONCLUSION: NO BIG WARS

Maybe I’m whistling through the grave yard, but aside from the terrible dollar value we are suffering, I think things will probably improve in the not too distant future regarding Israel and the chances of war.

Sooner or later Hamas, Hezbollah or the Islamists might boil over but those are not major war events – unless you or your loved ones are involved personally. It’s like Katrina was not as major as a nationwide drought for two years would be. Isolated, dealt with and the rest of the world felt bad but moved on.

MOORE’S MUSINGS:

I am going to drop this part of our column for a while. With the new format I am giving you a lot of the same kind of thing, and so we will close this down unless I have something unrelated to current events that I just want to get off my chest.

The one thing I do want to leave you with is the idea that it is easy to get despondent watching what is going on around the world.

But any kind of depression based on the news should be countered by faith in the fact that God is involved in the lives of people.

People on an individual basis and also in world events. I wish you’d take time to read the Bible and see what you can learn.

You can just about pick a book and see that God doesn’t give up on His people. In spite of ourselves, we can have faith that God knows more about what is happening today and what will happen tomorrow and wants to be a blessing.

You and I don’t have a lot of sway about most world events. But we do have a definite choice about how we respond to them and how we relate to the God of this world.

Read. Learn. Trust and have Faith.

Thanks for another week of letting me share some thoughts with you again this week. We pray for you, appreciate you and try to bring you some news and perspectives you might not get anywhere else.

Thanks, too for your friendship, support and encouragement. AND DON’T FORGET TO BUY THE NOVEL! You won’t be sorry.

Shabbat shalom,
